The state flag

Every state has a flag which represents its local. But if you’ve never seen Michigan’s flag, you might be wondering about its design and first unveiling. On a day when Americans feel more patriotic than ever, the state flag was first displayed. On July 4th, 1865, Michigan revealed its flag in unison with a construction celebration for the Soldier’s National Cemetery monument. As the corner stone was placed at this Gettysburg locale, the Michigan flag was adopted. The state has incorporated three different flags since 1837; however, the present design is exactly the same as the state seal, featuring a shield held up by a moose and an elk. Flying above the shield is the American eagle, holding his branch of 13 olives and three arrows. The flag even contains the same expressions as the state seal; “I will defend;” “if you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you;” and “from many, one.”
